Alhamdulillah wa salatu wa salam ala rasulullah (SAW) amma ba'd... Assalamualikum

Lying is a very common sin. At times we dont realise/accept that we lied, but it is high time we realise our mistakes and work on them.

One can lie due to various reasons. Most common ones are to protect oneself from getting scoldings, false excuses given for not able to do something, etc. These are very common but in the Quran, Allah mentions the reason why a person lies: “It is only those who believe not in the Ayaat of Allah, who fabricate falsehood, and it is they who are liars.” [Surah an Nahl 16:105]

By lieing, we indirectly reject His Signs and Verses and the punishment for that is grievous.

I want to share a few steps with you that will In Sha Allah help you if you implement them:

1. Make the intention to stop lying. [Do it for the sake of Allah so as to get for reward and His Help In Sha Allah]

2. Find out why you lie.

3. Try staying from falling into those situations

4. Learn to face problems than escaping it with a lie.

A common practice among people is to joke. More often, these jokes contain lies. Islam does not prohibit one from joking. Rather there are evidences that Prophet Muhammad (SAW) joked.

Abu Hurayrah (RA) narrated :Prophet (SAW) was told, "O Prophet (SAW), you are joking with us." He (SAW) said: "I only say what is true." [Tirmidhi]

Hence we can joke but we have to be careful with what we say. If it involves lies, then we better stay quiet then say something that displeases Allah.

Lieing is permissible under 3 cases as is stated:

Humaid bin Abd Ar-Rahman bin Awf narrated that his mother Umm Kulthum bint Uqabah bin Abi Mu’ait told him that she heard Messenger of Allah (SAW) say: “He is not a liar who reconciles between people saying good things and conveying good things.”Ibn Shihab said that she said: “I did not hear of any concession being granted concerning anything that people call lies except in three cases: War, Reconciling among people & What a man says to his wife or a woman says to her husband(praising one another).”

[Hadith No. 6633 (2605), Book of Al-Birr, Sahih Muslim, Vol. 6]

Telling lies is a sin. Continuing telling one will lead one to become a habitual liar and the person will then find difficulty to leave the habit. He/she will lie even when not required. So I advise you, my brothers and sisters, if you have lied, repent and give up this habit (no matter what the reason is unless it falls in any of the three above mentioned category) for the sake of Allah.

If I made any mistakes, it was from Shaytan and my own mistakes. If anything you find is useful, is from Allah as He guides whom He wills.

JazakAllahu Khairan. BarakAllah Fekkum and Salam...
