Alhamdulillah wa salatu wa salam ala rasulullah (SAW) amma ba'd... Assalamualikum
Okay. Relax. I know some of you be like its not mentioned in the Quran and Hadith that music is haram. I, In Sha Allah, will make mention of an Ayah and Hadith which shows that Music is Haram in Islam.
"And of the people is he who buys the amusement of speech to mislead [others] from the way of Allah without knowledge and who takes it in ridicule. Those will have a humiliating punishment." [Luqman 31:6]
Amusement of speech, in general, means vain/idol talk. But in this Ayah it refers to Music. Let me make my point clear to you by asking you a question. Could we understand the Quran without Prophet Muhammad(SAW) and the Sahabas (may Allah be pleased with them all)? No, we would not be able to. The Sahabas learned with the Prophet. They understood the Quran better than you and I do. They interpreted this Ayah to be referring to music. Two of the Sahabas that I would like to mention are Abdullah ibn Umar (son of Umar bin Al Khattab: 2nd khalifa) and Abdullah ibn Abbas (cousin of Prophet SAW). Prophet (SAW) said: "Whoever abuses my Companions, upon them is the curse of Allah, the angels and all the people" [Sahih]. This shows that we have to obey the Sahabas.

Now you may ask, why did not Allah mention music clearly? ... Because he gave understanding of the Quran to Prophet (SAW) and the Sahabas. Quran does not explain everything in detail. For example, Salah. It is mentioned in the Quran to perform Salah but now how to perform it. We take that from the Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad (SAW). And because at that time people understood it to be music, so there was no need of specific mentioning.
Narrated Abu 'Amir or Abu Malik Al-Ash'ari: that he heard the Prophet saying, "From among my followers there will be some people who will consider illegal sexual intercourse, the wearing of silk, the drinking of alcoholic drinks and the use of musical instruments, as lawful. And there will be some people who will stay near the side of a mountain and in the evening their shepherd will come to them with their sheep and ask them for something, but they will say to him, 'Return to us tomorrow.' Allah will destroy them during the night and will let the mountain fall on them, and He will transform the rest of them into monkeys and pigs and they will remain so till the Day of Resurrection." [Sahih Bukhari]
A certain group of people will make zina, silk, alcohol and musical instruments halal means they have to be haram to make them halal. We know that zina, silk and alcohol are haram. Hence, music too has to be haram.
Some may some music makes them feel better. But my brothers and sisters, it takes you away from the remembrance of Allah. Some of you may say, you still do remember Allah. Now lemme ask you something. Do you remember Allah when you listen to music and or hum 'that' song? Do you say bismillah when you start listening to music? No? Why? We are supposed to say Bismillah for every work we are going to start but not this. The answer is within you. I need not mention it.
So I hope its clear that Music is Forbidden in Islam. Now I wanna mention some steps which helped me and will In Sha Allah help you:
1. Make the intention (be firm) to stop listening to music for the sake of Allah.
2. Take your phone. Delete all the songs. If you find it too hard, then delete the songs which you dont listen to much often. It will get reduced to around 10. Keep doing this for weeks until you have 1 song left. It will require some 'courage' to do it. But In Sha Allah you will develop that over weeks.
3. Download some Quran recitation and save in your phone. Listen to it frequently. It will soothe your heart In Sha Allah even when your sad/angry much more and effectively than Music did.
4. If you were too addicted to Music, then download some Nasheeds. [Note: Do this only if you are too addicted to music and find it difficult to leave. Listening to Quran is much better. But if you find it difficult, then download some Nasheeds and Quran recitation. There is a misconception regarding Nasheed which I will In Sha Allah talk about in 'Misconception:Nasheeds']
I will upload some Nasheeds and Quran recitations to help you out In Sha Allah.
Please my brothers and sisters, stop it. Just stop it, right now. When you listen to music, you are in the company of devils. Stay away from such a sin. Stay close to Allah. Keep remembering Him more often.
If I made any mistakes, it was from Shaytan and my own mistakes. If anything you find is useful, is from Allah as He guides whom He wills.
JazakAllahu Khairan. BarakAllah Fekkum and Salam...
